Memorial Museum

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum for the first time in its history declared a genocide emergency in the Darfur region of Sudan . What made this so unusual was that the Museum's Committee on Conscience takes a very conservative approach to the definition of genocide. The world faces a choice now. We can do something, on both national and personal levels. On the Holocaust Museum 's alert sheet are five suggestions:

* Keep informed. Find out as much as you can from various news sources. Sign up to receive the Committee on Conscience newsletter and visit the Web site for updates.

* Contact the media. Write a letter to the editor of your local newspapers to keep Darfur in front of everyone and to underline its importance.

* Communicate with the government. Contact Congress and others in the decision making pipeline and let them know your views.

* Support relief efforts. Donate money and find out to be able to help.

* Get engaged in your community. Talk about Darfur with friends, family, teachers and organizations. Find groups in your area that might be working to address the crisis.

* Attend the crisis meeting at the Sixth and I Historic Synagogue on Dec. 4, sponsored by many area Jewish organizations and synagogues.
